Introducing Cally

Name: Cally
Breed: Labrador Cross
Parents: Rio (Labrador) and Bella (Hunter Spaniel)
Age: 7

Pet Trivia: Cally is named after Calleigh Ducaine from CSI Miami.

Hobbies:
  • Playing fetch with her favourite squeaky ball
  • Drooling
  • Following us wherever we go
Loves:
  • Treats
  • Playing fetch
  • Stealing food from Penny
  • Chewing on sticks
  • Lying on the back step

Hates:
  • The rain
  • Loud noises behind the neighbours fence
  • Male dogs
Tricks:
  • Fetch
  • Ball (will drop the ball at our feet to be thrown again otherwise she will just hold it forever)
  • Sit (very seldom)

Cally is a beautiful warm hearted dog who unfortunately doesn't know her own strength. When I was younger she broke free from her pen and knocked me over like I weighed nothing at all and started drooling all over me. It wasn't pleasant. It took me a long time not to fear her after that as she is such a strong dog but now I'm not scared of her anymore. I love playing fetch with her, even if I do throw like a girl. Though Cally doesn't mind. I hate her drooling though. It gets everywhere! Her tail is like a whip and it will bruise you if it hits you. Poor Penny now winces every time Cally's tail is near her for fear of getting whacked!

Deep down Cally reminds me of a horse with her strength and the way she runs. She literally gallops after the ball and will trip over her own feet at times. She also has a sneaky habit of using that strength to push past me to get inside the house. As a puppy, she rarely barked. We literally had to coax her to make any noise at all and when she did it was always very unexpected. Almost as if we had been ignoring her for too long. As she got older she barked more and we ended up wishing for the quiet Cally again. However she won't bark at strangers so she's a shit guard dog. She wears a red collar, howls at ambulance sirens, greets us with a wagging tail and I love her deeply.

7 Facebook Types

I recently read an article in Fabulous Magazine about the different types of people that use Facebook. What I found interesting is that I have known people from every category both on Facebook and on Blogger. Do you fall under any of these categories? Or know anyone who does?

The DIY Philosophers

These people will post status updates that are basically just insightful or inspirational quotes. They do this in an attempt to appear smarter and wiser than they are actually are. Eg Update: "When one door of happiness closes, another one opens. Yet we spend so long staring at the door that has just closed that we do not notice the one that has just opened.

The Sympathy Seekers

These people want everyone and their uncle to know just how miserable they are, even if it was just a bad day at work. They do this in the hope that someone will comment saying, "oh no, what happened? You okay?"  Eg Update: "Feeling down. Why does bad stuff always happen to me? :(((((( "

The Smug Socialisers

These people will attend every party, brag about every one and upload hundreds of photos to show how "mad" their night was. They do is to make others believe that they are fun and because they can't have a good time without having everyone thinking that they're having a good time. Eg Update: "OMG what an awesome night! Three amazing parties and all night clubbing! Doing it all again tonight!"

The Baby Bores

These people will update you on every blink and burp their bundle of joy does and will probably get "daddy" to like every status. They do this because they believe their baby is the most interesting person in the world and so want to share everything about them for everyone to read. E.g Update: "Tommy just did his first solid poo! Now he's taking a nap!"

The Cryptic Comment Chasers

These people will post cryptic messages that tell you absolutely nothing at all just to get people to comment asking questions. They do this because they don't think their lives are all that interesting and so will dress up their status' to make themselves look more mysterious. E.g Update: "Oh what have I done..." or "I'm going to regret that in the morning..." Or "Just spent the night with someone special..."

The Fire Starters

These people will post controversial opinions just to start trouble and get an arguement started. They do this because they want a bit of exitement in their boring lives but in a way that won't get them physcially hurt by those they're insulting. E.g Update: "Unemployed people are scum" or "Adele is so fat"

The Modest Braggers

These people will post something complimentary about themselves but then undermine it with something self-deprecating to counter out the arrogance. They do this because they know just posting compliments about themselves is a big no no but they still want peoples approval so will post negative comments about themselves as well to hide their boasting. E.g Update: "I'm a really good writer, but alas, only with fiction" or "I have great hair and big boobs but I'll never be popular"

The Sympathy Seekers, The Cryptic Comment Chasers and The Modest Braggers are the groups of people that annoy me the most. Though to be fair I'm probably guilty of being a Sympathy Seeker at times myself! What about you?

Song of the Week #24

Kingdom Hearts - Hollow Bastion

I love the Kingdom Hearts franchise so imagine how heartbreaking it is for me to know that there is a new game out but only for the Nintendo 3DS - something I don't own! Ah well. Here's one of my favourite songs from the first game but seriously, the soundtracks for the first two games are beyond fucking awesome it's so hard to choose an overall favourite song.

Olympics 2012

Did many people stay up and watch the Olympics Opening Ceremony a few days ago? I can't believe I watched it all because it lasted agggges! My favourite parts were Mr Bean, James Bond and the huge Voldemort! And I thought the lighting of the flame was pretty cool - I loved watching them rise up and join as one! I would say though that I would have been completely lost without the commentators explaining what was happening and I was a tad disappointed they didn't include any Doctor Who!

The only thing I hate is that I have to watch whatever the BBC decides to show as I don't have the "magic red button" to watch a specific sport which sucks as I only like a few sports - gymnastics, diving, showjumping and archery. So hopefully they'll show a fair amount of those for me to enjoy!

July Fails

During the month of July, I encountered a few things that could only be seen as utter fails...

#1 Oranges

In a quest to be healthier, I decided that I would try oranges to see if I liked them. Hoping that I would so that they would become a healthy snack option. But alas, I do not. It just felt weird to chew! I did however like the flavour of them so perhaps I could get my fruit intake via smoothies and juices.

#2 Feeling Sick

527188_474093135934523_1639667462_n_large

In the past two weeks alone my health has taken a nose dive. It's nothing too serious, just a serious lack of appetite which means that I get cramps if I don't force myself to eat. I've said before that forcing yourself to eat when you're not hungry is extremely hard so I've had a lot of cramps. Hopefully it will end soon!

#3 Phone Glitches

I genuinely love my new phone but it has one major glitch that keeps pissing me off! It keeps telling me that my SD card is either damaged or that it has been removed unexpectantly even though I've never touched it! This wouldn't be so bad if it didn't wipe my apps and photos every time it displays the message! I then have to turn my phone off and on to get it working properly again. So unbelievably annoying. I must remember to contact O2 to get this sorted!

July Favourites

During the month of July, I encountered some things that can only be described as new favourites of mine

#1 The Inheritance Cycle

This book series is amazing. I love love love it so much! Before starting the fourth and final book, I reread the first three and I'm so glad I did because I really enjoyed reacquainting myself with the story and all the characters. The ending is quite bitter sweet but that didn't make me love it any less. Seriously, I'd highly reccomment this series to any Fantasy lovers out there!

#2 The Amazing Spider-Man

I thought this movie was really awesome and I urge you all to go see it. Click here for a full review!

#3 24

I know I am very very late in discovering this show but I think it's really cool! I'm nearly finished the first season and can't wait to see more!

Knock Knock

Despite having loads of time to spend on writing super dooper fantastic blow your mind posts, I just can't be bothered right now. Don't blame me, blame my stomach. Anyways, I promise I'll write something more substantial soon but for now, just enjoy this picture with me. Isn't it awesome?!

I miss David

The Secret Garden

I've challenged myself to read as many Classics as I can and I'm happy to announce that I've recently finished The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I chose this book first as I always enjoyed watching the film but... I found the book quite disappointing.

The story sees Mary, a recently orphaned ten year old leaving India to live with her uncle in England where she discovers a secret garden. It's a secret garden because its been locked up for ten years as her uncle's wife died inside it. She also befriends a local boy who can charm animals as well as her cousin who has been hidden away in the house because they all fear he is going to die. Over time they all enjoy the wonders of the secret garden and grow healthy and happy together.

What annoyed me about the book was that the first half of it centres round Mary and watching her develop from a spoilt brat into a friendly and likeable little girl. We follow her as she learns to accept the people around her, realising that she can be independant, being with her as she makes so many discoveries such as finding the secret garden and exploring the hundred plus rooms in the house. But then suddenly the book seems to focus more on her cousin and how the secret garden will make him less of a rude hypocondriac but into a polite little gentleman. Once he makes it into the secret garden it's all about him and you never really get to hear from Mary's point of view again like you did in the first half of the book.

The main theme of the whole story is the healing power of Nature but seriously, there are only so many times you can read about how great fresh air is. Then again, maybe it's just me being cynical because I wasn't feeling on top form as I read about how every day these ten year olds would run around, gardening and exercising, gaining such huge appetities that they could eat and eat. How dare fictional characters make me feel inadequate?

Controversially, I prefer the movie

Leave British Shows Alone!

No offence, but America is really shit at making remakes of British shows. I therefore demand them to stop doing it! You already have great shows like The Big Bang Theory and Community so there really is no need for you to attempt to recreate The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd, Spaced and Sherlock Holmes!

P.s whose bright idea was it to make Dr Watson female?! That's just wrong.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

What's in a name?

 Tumblr_lpk21o4jew1qctjnko1_500_large

I like to think that every parent has a reason for choosing the name they named their child. Has it got a special meaning? Was it a family tradition? Were they named after someone special? Or did they simply pick it out of a hat?

I'm happy to say that my parents named me after a singer, Hazell Dean. Though thankfully they dropped the second "l" which is a tad pointless in my opinion. What's funny is that my dad said that this singer sang what he says is his and my mum's "song" called Whatever I Do which I think is hilarious as the lyrics clearly define it as a break-up song!

Straight from the Heart

Some of you may have noticed and some of you may not have but I've been absent for a few days. I've been feeling a bit off physically what with having to force myself to eat due to having no appetite for the past ten days that I just wanted a few days to relax and not worry about blogging. And for the record, forcing yourself to eat with no appetite is extremely hard to do.

But anyways, I spent the weekend at Paul's where it was lovely just being able to relax in his company. We went and saw The Dark Knight Rises which was very cool and I also happened to fall in love with a puppy we saw in the local pet shop. I'm convinced the owner brought it in purely to show off.

I'm now home and slowly catching up on the posts I missed. The thing is though, I've lost my blogging mojo. I know a lot of bloggers are saying this lately but I mean it. I don't know what direction my blog is going in anymore. I feel like it should be more personal yet... I don't know how to do that. It's probably very hypocritical to own a blog and say that I'm private person but it's true. I've also let my petty emotions get the best of me over the past few weeks. I'm pretty darn jealous of a few you who may be reading this, i.e. your writing styles, your wit, the confidence you have in yourselves, how you all let your individuality shine etc. When I read your blogs and then look at mine, I feel like a fake basically.

It might take me a while to find my blogging mojo again, or it might not. Who knows. And for any of those who are panicking, I'm not deleting my blog!

I'm also starting to think that I'm not really a good cyber friend to any of you. I won't name names but there are some people I've found through blogger that I simply adore yet, I don't email or tweet you as often as I think I should. I've seen little blogger groups form and I can't help feeling that I'm like the little loner on the outskirts looking in. I don't know.

Anyways, I've said enough for one night. I'm off to watch Horatio...

100 Things Northern Ireland Part 10

Northern Ireland is a beautiful country that I think most people overlook due to its troubled past. I therefore wanted to list 100 things that I love about my country that hopefully, will make you fall in love with it too...

File:StormontGeneral.jpg

Stormont is Northern Ireland's parliment buildings and is so named because that is where it is located - Stormont, Belfast. At Christmas, if there is snow, all the local children come out with their sleighs and slide down the hill! Stormont was also the location of George Best's funeral service as it was the only place large enough to accommodate all his fans who wanted to attend.

Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles as it is 20 miles long, 9 miles wide and is 25 metres deep at it's deepest. It's clearly visible on maps of Northern Ireland. Legend has it that the giant Finn McCool formed the lake by scooping up a portion of land and throwing it at his Scottish rival. He missed and it landed in the Irish Sea, forming the Isle of Man.

#93 Halloween Carnival

I love the fact that my home town, Londonderry, throws such a massive Halloween Carnival. It's a four day event that includes a parade, fireworks, dressing up, scary activities for the kids, a maze of horrors and so much more. I can't wait to go to it this year.

GG11 0545

A beautiful resort where you can go to indulge in a number of treatments aimed to help you relax and unwind. Located near the spa is woodland so you can't help but feel at one with nature. It's a very very popular place that's almost always booked up but I hope I'm lucky enough to get to stay there sometime!

These two cranes are very famous landmarks in the city of Belfast. They are quite big and you can see them instantly as you enter the city.

 Carrickfergus Castle - carrickfergus, Antrim

Carrickfergus Castle was built in 1177 by John de Courcy and has been standing for over 800 years. It is a Norman castle located in Carrickfergus and has been besieged by the Scots, English, Irish and the French over the many years it's been standing. It was very useful back in medieval times as 3/4 of its perimeter is surrounded by water.

Northern Ireland has some of the quirkiest and strangest place names I've ever heard. Here are just a few: Kilkeel, Fintona, Eglinton, Holywood, Lurgan, Portadown and Magherafelt.

Scrabo Tower can be found in County Down and was built on a volcanic plug as a memorial to the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, Charles Stewart. It has 122 steps which takes you an open viewing level where you can look over the town below.

#99 The Richmond Centre

Like Foyleside, Castle Court and Victoria Square, The Richmond Centre is another shopping centre. It's probably my favourite as it has all my favourite stores in it.

#100 Northern Irish Bloggers

And of course me! The above bloggers were either born here or now call Northern Ireland their home. I've only found a few so maybe Northern Irish bloggers are quite rare? Who knows!

Life Ambition #63

“Society is a masked ball, where everyone hides his real character, and reveals it by hiding”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

#63 Attend a Masquerade Ball

For as long as I can remember I've always dreamed of attending a masquerade ball, wearing an elegant gown and mask and dancing the night away... I've always wanted to dance in public but my sheer lack of confidence has always stopped me. That's why I think a masquerade ball would be perfect as my face would be hidden and I wouldn't have to fear people knowing who I am. I cannot tell you how much that level of privacy/secrecy appeals to me. It's also very sneaky being able to hide oneself in full view that I can't help but love the thought of it...

"Help will always be given at Hogwarts, for those who ask for it..."

This post is for my fellow Harry Potter fans out there as I'm hoping you'll be able to help me figure out the answers to the following questions that have been keeping me up at night...

HogwartsismyrealhomeÏŸ

Q When Voldemort tried to kill Harry as a baby, he transferred some of his powers etc into Harry - making him an unintentional 8th horcrux. So when Voldemort destroyed that horcrux by trying to kill Harry a second time, does that mean that Harry can no longer talk to snakes?

Q When the war at Hogwarts ended and Voldemort was defeated, did Harry and co go back to Hogwarts for their final missed year of education?

Q Is your seven years at wizarding school the end of your education? I mean, muggles can go to university after finishing school but can wizards? Are they all getting jobs straight after finishing their NEWTS? Are NEWTS the only qualifications they need?

Q Did Harry become an Auror like he wanted to? Would there be any point now that Voldemort and his followers were defeated?

Q If House Elves are freed by being given clothes, does that mean they never did the laundry?

Any answers would be appreciated!

Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know

I think this song as been around for a while but I've only just discovered it and I think it's awesome! I especially love the chorus though the video is a tad weird...

The Amazing Spider-Man: Review

WARNING: THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!!

As forementioned, I went and saw this last night with Paul and as the title suggests, it was amazing!

It starts off with a young Peter Parker discovering that his dad's office has been searched which panics their parents into leaving him with his aunt and uncle vowing to return for him. But they never do. Years later he's a teenager at high school and he's an outcast/geek/loner despite being quite good-looking! Oh Hollywood, sticking glasses on someone doesn't make them ugly ya know!

After discovering that his dead dad used to work with a scientist called Curt, he goes and finds him by sneaking into his company as an intern. Curt only has one arm and has made it his life work to find a way to cross DNA with other species such as reptiles who have regenerative genes with humans in a hope of making his other arm regenerate. They explain it much better than I do so don't worry.

Whilst there, he gets bitten by a strange spider. Well actually a hole bunch of them fall on him and it wasn't pleasant to watch! *shudder*. Afterwards, he gets a bunch of side effects such as his hands keep sticking to things, he's always breaking things due to being incredibly strong and developing really really fast reflexes. The discovery of each and every one of these side effects is hilarious!

He then has an arguement with his uncle and runs out of the house. His uncle follows him and gets caught up in a robbery and dies after being shot. Peter then uses his new found skills to hunt the murderer down but never finds him. After fighting a bunch of guys that turn out not to be the shooter, he learns to cover his face using a mask. Eventually he makes a pretty darn good outfit that I refuse to believe a teenager could make.

Whilst this is happening, Curt is being pressured to find the serum that will make regeneration possible. Peter helps by supplying him with an equation that his dad had in his secret notes and eventually Curt tries his serum on himself. It turns him into a lizard and he causes a disturbance on a bridge which attracts Peter. Lizard Curt eventually leaves and Peter saves a boy and finally calls himself Spider-Man.

Throughout the film, Peter fancies a girl in his class called Gwen who happens to work for Curt. She didn't really take any notice of him until he got bit and started acting more confident. At dinner at her place where him and her dad, the police chief, get into an arguement over Spider-Man, he reveals to Gwen that he is indeed Spider-Man.

Curt starts to get more and more crazy the more times he transforms himself into the lizard and decides to turn people into lizard people too "to cure them of human weakness" by heading to his workplace to release the serum into the city via a huge machine. He manages to get a few people turned when he drops the serum in gas containers in the streets however. All the while he is fighting Spider-Man but the police intercept Spider-Man and eventually Gwen's dad discovers that it is Peter. However he lets him go because at that moment Gwen is working on an antidote to the serum in the building Lizard Curt is heading towards and he knows Peter can protect her.

In the end, Gwen's dad distracts Lizard Curt long enough for Spider-Man to release the antidote into the air which causes the infected people plus Lizard Curt to return to normal. Curt is also not evil anymore which to me made me feel that his character was roughly based on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Gwen's dad dies however after making Peter promise to leave his daughter alone in order to protect her. He heartbreakingly follows this promise for a while but by the end of the film it's clear that he's not going to keep it...

And a final, after credits scene shows Curt in prison where someone confronts him asking if he told Peter the truth about his parents' death...

I really really enjoyed this movie, especially because it was so cleverly written and really funny. I think they stayed relatively close to the comics too but don't quote me on that! And I actually preferred it to the original trilogy with Tobey Maguire. It's pretty long though so be prepared for a long sit!

Highlights:
  • Everything Andrew Garfield (Peter) said and did - he was very funny!
  • Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
  • The chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (Gwen)
  • The funny side-effect scenes!
  • The epicness when the builders helped Spider-Man using their cranes

Rating: 5/5

Today's Plan...

Happy Friday 13th everyone!

Is it just me or has there been a lot of Friday 13th's this year? I thought it was meant to be a rare date that happens every once in a blue moon but no, it's happened quite a bit this year. I'm not superstitious about this day at all, to me it's just another day...

Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing Paul tonight and going to see The Amazing Spider-Man! It should be good. Fingers crossed anyways!

I've also joined Bloggers.com so add me if you're on it!

And that's basically it for today. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Let's Get Controversial...

Thanks to the BBC I've watched two Shakespearean plays, Richard II and Henry IV Part I in the past fortnight. I hope I don't sound pretentious but I thought both were excellent and I can't wait til they show Henry IV Part II! I've never seen a Shakespearean play before, I've only ever read Macbeth for school but I'm really happy that I enjoyed them. I was kinda worried that they might be a bit difficult for me to understand but they weren't. At times the dialogue was lost on me of course but I quickly picked up the gist of each of the plays. Plus the fact that Jeremy Irons and Loki from the Avengers were in Henry IV Part I didn't hurt...

Afterwards, they show documentaries about Shakespeare and his plays and one of the things that popped up was the conspiracy theory that Shakespeare didn't write the plays at all. Instead some people believe, including the actor Derek Jacobi, that another, for example the Earl of Oxford wrote them and that Shakespeare, a mere actor, took the credit. Their reasons for this include:

  • Playwriting was considered shameful and embarrassing back then within families of nobility so the Earl of Oxford (if it was him) couldn't accept credit, even if he wanted to, without disgracing his family.
  • Shakespeare, this great literary genius, kept his children illiterate. Why?
  • There is no evidence to suggest that Shakespeare received an education so how did a son of a glover learn to read and write when his own parents couldn't?
  • Shakespeare came from Stratford-upon-Avon, so how did he know intimate details of how the courts worked, politics, culture and foreign countries that are so evident in his plays?
  • In Shakespeare's will, he makes no mention of his 18 unpublished plays and the only theatrical reference was added after he died...
  • The plays were signed inconsistantly with Shake-speare or Shak-spear which leads many to believe that Shakespeare was just a pseudonym or a made up person as characters with hyphens in plays such as Master Shoe-tie and Sir Luckless Woo-all were usually fictional.

I found this conspiracy theory really interesting but I don't know if I believe it. Sometimes it feels that if someone shows great talent or is extremely successful then people want to take it away from them and it feels like people are doing that to Shakespeare. Maybe they're right and Shakespeare is a fraud but want good would it do if it was proven true?

100 Things: Northern Ireland Part 9

Northern Ireland is a beautiful country that I think most people overlook due to its troubled past. I therefore wanted to list 100 things that I love about my country that hopefully, will make you fall in love with it too...

Rathlin Island IOTA DX News GI8P

Rathlin Island is the northernmost point of Northern Ireland and is located off the Antrim Coast. It's 4 miles east to west and 2.5 miles north to south and has a population of only 100 people. It's very popular with bird watchers with tens of thousands of birds living there. It's also very popular with tourists from the mainland visiting during the summer months.

#82 Scenic Drives

Tumblr_m4plrnalw31r98ih4o1_400_large

One of my favourite things in the world is going on scenic drives in the countryside. The scenery is absolutely breath-taking here and if you ever get the chance to visit, you have plenty of scenic drives to choose from. Just remember Americans, we drive on the left hand side of the road, the steering wheel is on the right hand side of the vehicle and we change gears manually...

Mount Stewart is an 18th century house and is located in County Down. The entire estate is 98 acres and consists of a number of different gardens and a lake.

#84 Portrush Raft Race

Every year in Portrush, people come with their home made rafts to race. It's quite a fun day out!

This aquarium is located near Strangford Lough and displays all the marine wildlife that is found there and off the coast of Northern Ireland including a multitude of different fish, rays and crabs. It also has a seal sanctuary.

Give My Head Peace was a satirical comedy tv show that ran for ten years from 1998 - 2008 and was very funny as it took the piss out of the political parties,  paramilitary groups and the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland. It's so popular that it tours the country doing live shows on stage.

These circles were discovered in the 1940's near Cookstown, County Tyrone on the edge of the Sperrin Mountains. They are believed to be from The Bronze Age and act as some sort of burial ground.

#88 The Titanic Centre

The Titanic Centre is located in Belfast on the slipways where RMS Titanic was built. Inside a number of exhibitions that explain the ship's maiden voyage, how it sank and the aftermath etc. It also has a replica of the famous staircase that Kate Winslet walked down in the movie. You can also explore the actual wreckage underwater via video.

#89 Castle Court

Like Foyleside and Victoria Square, Castle Court is another of Northern Ireland's shopping centres. Again, it's not as large as those in America but to us Northern Irish folk - i.e. me, it's pretty huge.

#90 The Belle of Belfast City

This is my favourite song to listen to live in the traditional pubs! Mainly because it's one of the few I actually recognise...

Rammstein - Feuer Frei

Rammstein is my favourite band despite the fact that I have no idea what they're saying. Their music is just so awesome and epic! Especially this one which was the first song of theirs I had heard due to it being in the movie Triple X - one of my all time favourites.
