"Help will always be given at Hogwarts, for those who ask for it..."

This post is for my fellow Harry Potter fans out there as I'm hoping you'll be able to help me figure out the answers to the following questions that have been keeping me up at night...

Hogwartsismyrealhomeϟ

Q When Voldemort tried to kill Harry as a baby, he transferred some of his powers etc into Harry - making him an unintentional 8th horcrux. So when Voldemort destroyed that horcrux by trying to kill Harry a second time, does that mean that Harry can no longer talk to snakes?

Q When the war at Hogwarts ended and Voldemort was defeated, did Harry and co go back to Hogwarts for their final missed year of education?

Q Is your seven years at wizarding school the end of your education? I mean, muggles can go to university after finishing school but can wizards? Are they all getting jobs straight after finishing their NEWTS? Are NEWTS the only qualifications they need?

Q Did Harry become an Auror like he wanted to? Would there be any point now that Voldemort and his followers were defeated?

Q If House Elves are freed by being given clothes, does that mean they never did the laundry?

Any answers would be appreciated!

  1. I know Harry did become an Auror and from what I've done on obsessing reading about the series I think Harry, Ron and Hermione don't go back to get their qualifications but they do all get jobs which seems unlikely. Also I know Harry can't talk to snakes anymore xx

  2. I never thought about any of these things and now you have me wondering too.

  3. 1. I am pretty sure he can't talk to snakes anymore. But he could probably muster up a few sounds still. lol remember Ron and the Chamber? I love that part

    2. I don't think they did…but I really don't know. There might have been a special circumstance for them. Because Voldemort was defeated on May 2nd, so school would be practically over. Maybe everyone just redid that entire school year since they didn't learn much anyway? Or maybe they thought everyone went through enough and just let the trio go on without an extra year of schooling. Good question though!

    3. I know that if you want to be an Auror, you have to do like 2 or 3 years of training. Other jobs probably have training years as well, but there probably isn't such a thing as a wizard version of "graduate school". What do you think?

    4. He did become an Auror! Kingsley asked a lot of the main characters (Harry, Ron, Neville) to help him reform the ministry right after the war, and then Harry and Ron became full-time aurors. Harry is the head of the department by the time of the epilogue I believe.

    5. Oh my gosh good question!! No idea. But the whole clothes thing confuses me anyway. Was it like a real magical contract? Or was it just all in their heads? And in the 7th book, where did Kreacher get that fluffy white robe that he wears??? So many questions.

hahahahahaha you and I think alike. I've been rereading all the books so I have a running list of everything that confuses me in the series. Between you and me, I have had an unfinished draft in my blogger queue entitled "The cats of Hogwarts" . And let's just say it might be better if it stays a draft. But we'll see...

    1. Haha you should so publish that post about the cats of Hogwarts! You've got me insanely curious now! And I must reread the HP books sometime too!

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I hate how he lost the ability to talk to snakes and I would have loved them to go back to school to repeat their 7th year because I know they would have done it if Voldemort hadn't started a war.

That's so cool that he became an Auror - and the top one at that! Haha and I have no idea where he got that robe - though I can't remember it at all lol!

  4. I read somewhere (not sure where, possibly a J. K. Rowling interview) that he can't talk to snakes anymore, and he got a job in the auror department. I think he might have got promoted to the head of it, too. NEWTS are the highest qualification a wizard can get (I think) other than becoming an auror, and I think the clothes thing only counts if they are given directly to the elf - I imagine if they wanted them to do laundry, they would have the elf take the clothes from a basket :)

  5. I'm pretty sure JK Rowling said in an interview that Harry and Ron never went back to Hogwarts but that Hermione completed her 7th year.

  6. I doubt they had to repeat their final year, the final year is all about proving yourself and they probably did that quite well by defeating the dark lord lol

  7. Jk rowling stated that he did lose the power to speak with snakes. I also think she said Harry and Ron didn't go back but Herminone got her full education. Everyone who fought at the battle of hogwarts could become aurors without the proper newts.

I guess newts are degrees in a certain magic talent.

and Harry did become an auror, but the end of the Death Eaters wasn't the end of dark wizards causing (at least minor) trouble.

I guess house elfs don't do laundry. Except Dobby who steals all the socks

  8. I couldn't resist not commenting on a post that starts with "This post is for my fellow Harry Potter fans out there" :P

    1. I read somewhere that JKR mentioned Harry could no longer talk to snakes after the battle at Hogwarts.

    2. Perhaps. According to her website, Harry became an Auror. That would require a decent amount of NEWTs even if you've defeated the Dark Lord, I believe.

    3. Never gave it much thought. But not that you mention... hmmm

    4. Yes he did. I'm sure evil isn't something which is related to one and one person alone. So they must have encountered other Dark Wizards. :)

    5. Hahaha! I guess they would put the clothes in a basket and make the instructions clear, "Clean them!" :D

  9. Hahahha these are some serious questions! Your post has made me consider a re-reading Harry Potter books marathon this summer. Not being able to answer your questions makes me feel like I have failed the Harry Potter community as a fan.

  10. Harry and Ron were recruited directly into being Aurors but I think Hermione went back to school. I don't think there's a wizarding university but they do on the job training. Yes, there's still Aurors because there's always bad wizards. And I think the distinction is that elves have to be presented with clothes to free them. So if someone said, here wash this, that's not presenting them with clothes.

Have you checked out the Harry Potter websites? You can get all sorts of info. I like MuggleNet and the Harry Potter Lexicon when I have questions. And J.K. has a site called Pottermore that's alright. It's kind of aimed at kids but there's exclusive content straight from Jo like McGonagal's backstory, info about the Dursleys, explanations of the wands, etc.

  13. 1. My guess would be that Harry really wouldn't have much of the Parseltongue talent after the Horcux was killed. He might still have remember a few things, but it's probably like my Spanish skills now - dismal. ;o)

    2. I haven't found anything that says Harry and Company finished their 7th year at Hogwarts. From what I gathered, the 7th year was almost optional really. I mean the Weasley twins dropped out during what I think was their 7th year. Although, I'm inclined to believe that Harry and Company were allowed to either "take it or leave it" with their 7th year. Especially since they were the ones to defeat Voldemort.

    3. I don't think they had "university" in the wizarding world. I think it was more like apprentice-ships, where you had to work with someone in that field in order to do what you wanted. I think that's why they do the OWLS in their 5th year, so when they start their 6th year, they start going in the direction they want to. Then of course the NEWTS are probably like the SAT's for wizards. lol So by the time they graduate, they become an apprentice for another couple years and then they are good to go.

    4. Yes, Harry did become an Auror. And in case your curious, I came across an interview with Rowling just after Book 7 came out, to assist with the ending, because in my mind, the Epilogue was lacking. Harry became an Auror and was named head of the department by Kingsley Shacklebolt, and of course married Ginny. Ginny played for the Holyhead Harpies (the all-female Quidditch team), eventually leaving them to work for the Daily Prophet as their senior Quidditch correspondent and raising hers and Harry's kids. Ron did not become on Auror, but instead, joined his brother George in the joke shop after Fred's death. Ron, of course, married Hermione, who furthered the rights of subjugated creatures such as house elves in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures before joining the magical law enforcement squad. Luna became a famous wizarding naturalist who eventually married the grandson of Newt Scamander, who was the author of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". And of course we all know that Neville went on to be a professor of Herbology at Hogwarts.

This particular interview that I ran across does not say whether or not they went back to Hogwarts (any of them). And I'm sure Voldemort and his followers weren't the only ones to practice dark magic. I figure there will always be someone practicing dark magic, so best to always have Aurors in place.

    5. haha! That is a most excellent question. My guess is laundry would be part of their duties and had to pick up the laundry versus it being given to them. Either that or that was the only chore they couldn't do! lol

    1. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions J.Day!

I hope he retained some Parseltongue but like you said, I think it's unlikely. I never really thought of the 7th year as being optional! I think the Weasleys left because they said they don't need an education to start a joke shop? And yeah on the job training and apprenticeships make sense!

Aww thanks so much for all that info! That's really quite awesome! They all made something of themselves. I wonder if I can find that interview...

  14. Oooo now you've got me thinking!

I'm sure I read a JKR interview once that said Harry & Ron didn't go back to Hogwarts (I can't remember what it said about Hermione) but I can't find a link so maybe I made it up lol

Hahaha I never thought about House elves and laundry! :-D

  15. Harry couldn't talk to snakes anymore. The part of Voldemort that was inside of him as a horcrux is how he got that ability, when it was destroyed, all of the attributes that came with it left Harry.

Hermione went back to Hogwarts to finish her 7th year. Or course she would! Harry and Ron didn't bother, I believe they went straight into work.

Wizards believed that after 7 years at Hogwarts you wear ready to face the world. I think the trio went on to become aurors. When Kingsley was appointed the new Minister for Magic, he gave them jobs straight away as a thank you for all that they'd done.

And no, house elves, never did the laundry. :(
