X is for X-Men

One of the highlights of growing up in the 90's was watching X-Men. I loved it so much that I was really excited for the movies - which I loved. Though I was slightly disappointed by some of the mutants. So here is a little run down on some of the characters along with my opinion on them.

Professor X was perfect

Wolverine was also perfect

Storm in the cartoon was strong and badass, but in the movies she just seemed kinda... meh

Beast was perfect. Despite there being continuity errors. In X-Men: First Class we see Hank McCoy change into Beast as a teenager, but in the X-men 2 you can clearly see a normal Hank McCoy talking on the tv aged 30+

Like Storm, he was good but not as badass as the cartoon version

Pfft Gambit sucked in the movies compared to how cool he was in the cartoon

Nightcrawler was perfect

And so was Jean Grey, though I found the movie version ever so slightly annoying

Phoenix was horrible. I can't remember too much about her in the cartoon but I do remember feeling sorry for her. I plain hated the movie version.

Magneto was perfect

And so was Mystique, though I think the movie version was better

And finally Rogue. My all-time favourite from the cartoon. I just thought she was sassy and cool so guess how disappointed I was by the movie version. Ugh. She's just so pathetic and doesn't have the same powers. Though I was told that Rogue gains super strength and flight later on so I'm hoping that if they make anymore movies then she'll develop them. Hopefully they'll make her have a relationship with Gambit too or is that asking too much?

  1. I do feel (sorta) for Wolverine, but he's not the Super-Batman everyone makes him out to be, imho.

I did like Beast from the cartoon version (never watched the movies). Man, Beast was BEAST! (If you forgive the horribly shitty go-punch-myself pun.)

    1. I think I'd pick Wolverine over Batman anyday!

You should watch the movies, they're great!

  2. Well you're right about Beast. When X-Men first started he only had the advanced agility and everything, the fur was a very delayed side effect. As for Rogue she did get the strength and flight when she nearly killed Marvel Girl. She absorbed her powers for so long that she stripped them away permanently. I will agree that she just wasn't the same in the movie. I guess it's because she was still young in the movies. In the comics she didn't start out as an X-Man and who knows? Meh. Movies. Gambit was always my favourite. Good ol' Remy LaBeau. As much as I love Wolvie, I still call Gambit my favourite. I felt sorry for Phoenix in the cartoons because she didn't ask for any of what she had. It was like she was evil, but not because she wanted to be. It was even worse because Jean Gray had no control. To stop the Phoenix, Jean would probably have to die. I think they kind of captured that in the movie when she did die, but for the most part they didn't. I liked the movies, but I think they got progressively further away from the source material as they went on. Plus they didn't focus on all the characters equally, so some were left out of the shuffle, like Storm.

    1. I really don't know what to say to that, seems you've covered a lot of stuff which I agree with

  3. I was always an X-Men comic book fan....I was slightly too old when the cartoon came out, but liked how it tried to streamline the semi-convoluted history the comics had become.

I really liked all five X-Men related movies. My kids have always liked the X-Men Evolution cartoons....

    1. I've actually never read a comic book in my life but I'm sure they're really good! I'm glad you liked all the movies because I did too!

  4. Ooooh Mystique <3

I'm not really familiar with X-Men, but I watched the one sequel (prequel?) because my in-laws mentioned that the Cuban Missile Crisis played a role in the story, so I checked it out at the library. I was kind of confused about some things, but it wasn't bad. I might even see the next one.

  6. Only watched First Class, and never seen any of the originals. I do remember laughing my ass off at the end of it when Magneto slowly put on his helm and said "I am... Magneto." It just came over as really really stupid in a hilarious way, haha.

  8. I agree with both you and Mark. I know they can't always follow the source material perfectly but I think they did stray farther and farther with each movie. X-Men First Class was a combination of close to the source material and far away. The spin offs (Wolverine) were terrible and I was very disappointed in Gambit as he was one of my favorites too. Yes, they should just have kept Storm out rather than treat her the way they did.

    1. I think a lot of people would have complained if Storm was left out. She was a main character in the cartoons and comics so it would have looked even worse without her. So I'd rather have a crap Storm than no Storm at all.

Though I wish they'd done a better job with her, Rogue and Gambit because they were seriously disappointing!

  10. I agree with the ones you say are perfect, especially Professor X and Magneto. (Couldn't have picked anyone better than Patrick Stewart in my opinion.) Cyclops was my favorite character in the cartoon, but he was kind of meh to me in the movies.

    1. Aww I'm glad you do! And yes, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing him lol!

I agree with the movie Cyclops, though I didn't really like him in the cartoons. Probably because I was always rooting for Logan lol!

  12. Hugh Jackman portrayed Wolverine deliciously well. And I can't think of a better actor to play Dr. X than the sexy Patrick Stewart!

  13. I have the complete series of the Uncanny Xmen. My favorite there is Gambit. He's bad-ass... but I don't think the movie did the character justice. Sad. :(

The phoenix.. well, in the cartoons, the Phoenix wasn't really evil, I think.. I mean, she emerged and took over Jean Grey because she sensed a threat. She's a guardian. But the Dark Phoenix, yeah that one was evil. And Jean can't control her. Hmmm... I may be wrong. I'd better watch the series again. ahehe..

Oh.. and Love LOGAN, too. ;)

    1. Yeah the movie Gambit was seriously disappointing!

Ahh yes, that makes more sense concerning the phoenix as a protector. That's what I remember anyway, her being good. I don't think I ever saw the evil phoenix in the cartoons though. Must have missed those episodes lol!
