W is for Wolves

Wolves are my absolute favourite animal

I had this as my desktop background all Winter

Don't get me wrong, I adore other animals like horses, dolphins, otters, red pandas etc but none of them compare to wolves in my eyes. I just think wolves are beautiful, strong, and intelligent creatures.

I love how they can survive on their own but that they thrive in a pack. I love how they are one of the few mammals out there that has a family mentality and that they have a hierarchy system of an Alpha male and female and that they will mourn for a fallen member.

I watched a recent documentary called Land of the Lost Wolves where wolves are slowly reintroducing themselves to the Cascade mountain range in America and the locals are not happy about it. One guy started ranting about how they are evil killers and showed pictures of a mauled deer. What the fuck is he expecting them to do? They are hunting to survive just like a lion would hunt zebra! I hate how wolves are portrayed as evil by hunters, especially in America. Now I understand if they are killing your livestock or are too close for comfort to your children, by all means protect yourselves. But do not go out and deliberately hunt them just because you do not like them.

  1. I totally agree with everything you've posted! How ridiculous can some people be to expect a wolf not to hunt - I doubt they'd have the same complaints about a lion or a tiger!

Wolves are beautiful animals - I've always wanted a husky dog as they remind me of wolves!

My favourite animals are either a panther, a tortoise or a great white shark! :-)

    1. Aww I'm so glad you agree with me! And yes, exactly! They wouldn't complain in the slightest about a lion or tiger hunting!

Haha yes, I've always wanted a husky dog for that reason too!

And I've never heard of those animals being someone's favourite animal before!

  3. Wolves are the absolute best canines ever. Saint Bernards don't even come close.
But yeah, people should stop hating on them. And they usually don't attack humans unless provoked or put in a nasty situation.

    1. I agree, though Alsations and Huskies would be before St Bernards! Though they're awesome too :)

I hate how much hatred people have for them!

  4. Let's not forget the very same hunters who are calling wolves evil killers because they maul deers (for food) are the ones shooting them (for fun). Wolves are absolutely amazing, and sometimes they seem to have better communities than humans.

    1. Yeah exactly, that's why I said they shouldn't just hunt them because they don't like them.

I adore the family mentality of wolves :)

  5. I agree, how are they expected to survive without eating? it's no different to us going to a butchers and buying some meat that someone else killed for us.

They have just as much right to be on this earth as humans do (as do all animals, insects etc except cockroaches - eugh ;) ) and people just need to learn to accept that

    1. Yeah exactly! I got so frustrated listening to them complain about how awful they are for hunting and killing deer. It was bordering on the ridiculous!

I agree, I wish people would just accept them for the beautiful creatures they are :)

  6. Hunters are just mad because they are killing all the game in the area. They need to realize that the wolves do it to survive while the hunters themselves do it for fun.

    1. Yeah that is probably the real reason why they're so angry with them, that they get the game before they can!

  7. Wolves are amazing. I've never really thought about it before but right now I think about it, they seem quite spectacular.

  9. You know, even though I'm frightened of them, I hate the way that they are hunted so much. They're running out in Scandinavia because of it, I think.

Thank you for all your comments, I feel bad that I run out of time to visit blogs sometimes. It's so sweet of you to always come by and leave me a comment, I really appreciate it :)

    1. I was actually a bit worried about how you'd take this post but I'm glad you could understand and see how horrible it is that they are hunted so much.

I think they were native in Ireland centuries ago but they were hunted to extinction here unfortunately :( so I hope that doesn't happen in Scandinavia!

And no worries, I like reading your posts and your blog is one of my new favourites :)

  10. They are beautiful but I would for sure be afraid if I came across one. I love horses, they are my favourite animal. Last summer while I was camping we came across this really beautiful horse and I just loved him, he was such a sweetie, made me want horses of my own.

  11. I have a chapter with wolves in it in my second book. But these wolves eat a couple bad guys who are after the protagonist. So as far as the good guy is concerned, the wolves are life saver.

  12. A wolf came down into NE California in late December from Oregon. It was big news because there hasn't been a single wolf in CA since the 1920s. Environmentalists believe our area could support a few hundred wolves. Unfortunately, hunting season helps keep things like the deer population under control. If you reintroduce wolves, you have to regulate them as well. Otherwise, there won't be a hunting season. Plus, ranchers don't like wolves because wolves will go after livestock - which is a rancher's livelihood, especially if the wolves have killed off most of the natural prey. Each lost calf or lamb is lost money. I know a guy who had a guided hunting deal in Alaska. He went out of business because the wolves weren't regulated and killed all the game, so no more hunters. It's not a black and white issue as many people think it might be. And I can tell you, the hunters I have met up here, don't just hunt for fun. They hunt to also fill their freezers.

I agree with you on the fact that they are beautiful creatures.

And I wouldn't consider them "villified". Ranchers know what the wolves are capable of. Environmentalists don't always realize what it costs the ranchers when the natural prey is gone or dwindled.

    1. Yeah the documentary I watched said that wolves could be supported all the way down to Mexico!

It also said that wolves are a valued member of the ecosystem and that when they were hunted and removed from American states, the deer populations increased which lead to a lot of shrubs being eaten within an inch of their lives. Wolves are needed to regulate the deer and yes I suppose once wolves gain in number they would need to be regulated too.

But it should be done by experts not angry hunters. I understand that they kill them to protect their livestock - I even mentioned that in my post but I still think the majority of the hunters up there are cruel and full of hatred for them
