A is for Archery

Archery, to me, is one of the coolest sports around

Seriously, who wouldn't want to be Katniss? Or Legolas from LOTR? Their skill with a bow and arrow are second to none and yes I know they are fictional characters but that's besides the point.

I adore archery and would love to learn how to do it someday. Not only is it a skill that is predominant in my favourite genre: Fantasy, but it is also a skill that was predominant in one of  my favourite era's of History: Medieval/Middle Ages.

Unfortunately with the development of more advanced weapons, the use of bows and arrows quickly became obsolete. Which I think is a crying shame.

  1. I certainly have a man who adores his bows and arrows in this house. He even has a long bow (like Robin Hood etc)
Although I am not interested, I am fairly sure he would be encouraging you to try it.

    1. Yeah when I found out your husband does it I was very jealous lol! He's very lucky :)

  2. What? No Robin Hood? Boooo. But I am with you. I would love to know how to do it properly. It's not so bad it's not a weapon that's used to much, it's gone from being associated with violence to being a past-time. It's a lot better to own a bow and arrow than it is to own a gun.

    1. Yeah I'd rather own a bow and arrow than a gun anyday! I completely forgot about Robin Hood but ah well

  3. Not in the least! Bow and arrow are still very stealthy weapons! If you got good aim, you can snipe targets from afar. And unlike gun and bullet, no traceable mark is left on the projectile, and the weapon doesn't have a license that links to you either. Perfect for stealth-killing people, I'd say.
(God what the hell am I even thinking.)

Archery is the shit, I really need to look into the possibility of taking archery classes around here.

    1. Archery definitely is "the shit" and I'd love to take classes too! I agree with it being a stealthy weapon but I'd say it's harder to conceal than a gun lol!

  4. I have tried archery three times. I'm not very good but it was a lot of fun! I like to pretend I'm Katniss when I'm doing it x

  6. The only time I have ever done archery was as part of team building events that I've organized for clients; and its pretty damn cool once you get the hang of it!

Good post; and looking forward to the rest of them during the #atozchallenge :)

    1. I only wanted one female archer and one male archer and Katniss and Legolas were the first two that came to mind!

  8. I want to learn to handle a long bow but apparently I'm not strong enough to shoot an arrow, shooting it on target is just far away. -_-

But I love Archery. May be I'd choose it above guns, but not if it is a sniper rifle. ;)

    1. How could you not be strong enough? I'm sure it is hard to fire and hit targets though =/

  10. Not only does it have advantages in ranged combat, it looks awesome as well! I have to agree with you that it's a damned shame old-fashioned weapons went "out of style." If we need to have war, might as well use honest combat instead of machine guns and bioweapons. Wow, the strange things I think.

I once saw a ten-year-old boy shoot several arrows into the center of a target at a mock Viking fair, and wondered what I've been doing with my life.

    1. Haha I don't find those things strange at all, I'd much rather they stuck to bows and arrows than bombs and gas!

And don't worry, if I'd have saw him I would have felt exactly the same

  12. In our local paper's never-ending Hunger Games coverage, they did a front-page article on the increased interest and participation in archery. Bow and arrow sales are through the roof. Girls are having archery parties for their birthday.

Call it 'the Katniss effect' I suppose. Hopefully girls will stay interested long after the Hunger Games hype has died down.

    1. Sounds like you're a little fed up with The Hunger Games lol!

But that's good that there's more of an interest now, and hopefully it will stay around for a while :)

  13. Hey Hazel! You were actually one of the first blogs I was supposed to visit. I was in Boy Scouts. Because of this I have learned use and actually own a compound bow and arrow. I can't say I am as good as Katniss though.

  14. Archery is awesome :-) My ex tried getting me interested in deer hunting, but sitting 40 feet up in the air in a tree stand just didn't do it for me. I was far more into the target shooting.

When my ex and I went our separate ways I gave away my equipment. Kind of wish now I hadn't; I miss target shooting at the range.

    1. It's a shame you parted with your equipment but I say I'd be like you in that I'd prefer target shooting. I wouldn't be interested in shooting deer at all!

    2. The main reason why I gave it all away is because it was purchased for me by my ex...my one nephew has certainly gotten plenty of use out of it all over the years :-)

    3. That's understandle :(

And at least your nephew enjoys it :)

  18. I learned archery my freshman year at college. It's so much harder than it looks, you really need some upper body strength. You feel so powerful, though, when you finally hit your target!

  19. I must admit I am not interested in learning archery, but I absolutely loved Legolas in LOTR! From reading the other comments, I assume Katniss is a character in the movie "Hunger Games." Although I have read "The Most Dangerous Game," I don't think I want to watch the movie. Reading is one thing ... watching it played out in front my eyes would be too disturbing, especially since the ones doing the hunting and killing are teenagers.

  22. I bet if you do a little internet research you might find an archery range near your home. I spotted one years ago right next to the Amtrak Surfliner's tracks in Southern California. While a bow and wrist guard will set you back some cash at least the arrows are reusable.

  26. Have you read Ranger's Apprentice? This is a good story with a boy who is far too short to be a good character, so the author takes the story and makes the character go through enough action to please readers who enjoy Gandalf figures, backstory, and archery. The author doesn't confirm it but throughout the series there are hints that the story takes place in a postapocalyptic future.
