G is for Gymnastics

I'm not really into sports but if I had to be an athlete then I'd want to be a gymnast. It just looks so beautiful and elegant!

Alas, this dream will remain just that. A dream. For you have to start at a really young age in order to be that flexible and unfortunately my days of touching my toes to my forehead are long gone. Also, since doing an eight week course of gymnastics every year at school, it became quite evident that I do not possess the elegance or the skill to be a gymnast.

I'm far too heavy and don't have the upper or lower body strength to fling myself around like they can. Plus jumping over the buck was way out of my capabilities...

  1. I've always wanted to do gymnastics. It's funny, because I have been in dance all my life, and it would have been easy to just sign up for a class…but alas that never happened. Whenever there was a tumbling combination inserted into a dance…Lexie had to go off stage… :)

    1. Aww that's a shame, especially since I know you'd be so good at it what with being a dancer :)

  2. I remember when I was told I was the perfect height to be a gymnast Suddenly it was my dream until they realised I couldn't do the monkey bars. Hum.

    1. Lol! I'm sorry, but that made me giggle! Though I'll let you in on a little secret, I couldn't do anything! And we only had a few apparatus!

  3. The gymnastic events is the only reason I watch the Olympics! Haha I wish I was a gymnast (actually I wish I was a lot of things) it looks so cool!

    1. It's the only thing I watch too!

  4. Flexibility is something you can train. Just moving your borders by mere millimeters every time you do, and you'll be as flexible as them after a while!
Strength can be trained too. Really, if you want to be good at gymnastics, go for it. Worst case scenario is you get healthier and nothing else happens, so what have you got to lose? ;D

    1. Despite all that, I say it would take a lot of will power and discipline that I haven't got lol!

  5. It is a shame that it seems to be a dream that will never be :( Some gymnasts can perform incredible feats though :)

  6. Ikr!
Gymnastics looks so graceful and extremely elegant.
I always dreamt of being a ballet dancer. But I do not possess the body type or the dedication, I think.

  7. I agree on how elegant gymnasts look, though I've never wanted to be one. Now ballet, that I'd love haha

    1. Haha ballet dancers are beautiful and elegant too. It's the whole standing on toes bit that puts me off it though!

  8. I love gymnastics too! It's probably one of my favorite sports to watch at Olympic season. Sometimes it's almost unbelievable, the things they do! I think you also have to be pretty courageous. It must get pretty scary trying to learn a new flip when you know you might hurt yourself.

    1. Aww I agree completely. It really must be scary too!

  9. I would be a terrible gymnast! I am not very...delicate in the way I do things and I am not flexible in the slightest!x

  10. I'd love to be a gymnast but I'm far too clumsy. Actually, Althea above put it perfectly. I'm just not delicate enough! I'd be like a little elephant in stretchy clothes, galloping around everywhere making a total mess of it!

  11. Yes, I have dreams that will never be realized...but that's okay. I know God made me who I am for a purpose. Enjoy the challenge, Hazel!

  12. I've always been tall (even as a kid) but for some reason my grandmother thought I'd be perfect for the uneven bars...she tried to talk me in to trying out for gymnastics but I was far more interested in other things.

I do love watching gymnastics though.

  13. I'd never make it as a gymnast either... it takes far too much dedication.

    Happy Easter!

  15. I always wanted to be an ice skater. Alas, never an ice rink around, and since I can barely ROLLER skate, I figure I'd be a disaster on ice skates. lol

    1. Ahh yes, ice-skating is beautiful too! Alas I've never tried it and doubt very much I could do it, seeing as I never tried rollar skating either lol!

  17. I prefer sports that aren't judged because I hate when it gets all political. My sport is swimming and nobody can outfool the clock! That is a very graceful image of a gymnast though--I can see why you're enthralled. I'm way too tall and heavy to be a gymnast.

    1. I never really thought about that but I don't really watch it for winners, I just enjoy watching them perform lol

I'm glad you enjoy swimming but I find that extremely boring to watch lol!

  18. I'm the same as you, I'd love to be a gymnast because I think it's just amazing what they can do, but I'm not athletic at all, I'd just look silly if I tried! :)

But I agree with you, I've seen a few performances and all those elegant moves amaze me!

  21. Personally I would never even try gymnastics - I'm too terrified!! But people who're able to use their bodies that way? Wow, just wow.

  22. I dated a gymnast in high school. She never won a medal, but my goodness! her legs were elegant but made of steel rather than muscle.

  23. 8 weeks is hardly enough time to properly learn a new skill, much less something difficult like gymnastics.

I did gymnastics up until I turned 23. It's been really hard feeling my body lose its flexibility and my hips physically change so that they don't turn out as much.

It was fun, but honestly, watching it on the TV is much more fun, less stressful, and way more affordable. Gymnastics lessons are ridiculously expensive, and very few careers outside of the circus care if you can do a double back flip.

    1. Aww I know it's not and it probably didn't show me all that Gymnastics had to offer but still, it did show me that I wasn't flexible or strong enough to do it.

And yeah, I can understand it being more fun to watch that do yourself!
