Today will cause a lot of people great distress due to their superstitious nature. I find it quite amusing that one date can render people nervous wrecks. Especially since it doesn't happen all that often anyway.
I'm not a superstitious person but I used to be when I was kid. I avoided walking under ladders, or stepping on cracks and if I saw a magpie I always tried to find another one in order to make a pair. I only did this because everyone else did it though. If you didn't they'd laugh at you and say you were cursed, which is quite intense for a child!
I soon realised how foolish I was being though and stopped. Personally, I think it's sad that people live their lives based on their superstitions. I recently laughed when I found out that my cousin is rushing to get her wedding done this year because 2013 is too unlucky lol! Like, seriously?
But although I know it's not real some habits are hard to break! Don't judge me when I tell you that I still pair off magpies...
I don't know if this is a superstition or not, but I'm desperately trying to stop believing in jinxes. For example, I won't say that an exam was easy in case I jinx it and fail or I won't say that I aced an interview in case I jinx it and not get the job. Know what I mean?
It's not so bad to be fair, it teaches you to be humble and modest but sometimes it can be quite a nuisance!
So how about you?
Do you have any wacky superstitions?
Or do you find it all ridiculous?

I only have one superstition for Friday the 13th and that's that I need to watch a horror film. I don't think that anything bad will happen if I don't and I don't think or feel like I have to do it for any particular reason, I just feel it's a great day to do it.
ReplyDeleteAww well that's a good one to have! You could always watch Friday the 13th I suppose lol!
DeleteI think the worst thing that happened to me on Friday the 13th was getting hit in the face with a dodgeball when I was in 6th grade. Beyond that, nothing.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in bad luck. :-)
Oooh ouch! That sounds really sore!
DeleteI'm curious, if you don't believe in bad luck, does that mean you don't believe in good luck either?
I've never heard of the magpie one before! The only one I observe is not saying the name of the Scottish play when in a theatre.
ReplyDeleteWow really? I thought that was pretty well known! Though I've never heard of your Scottish play one before! O_o
DeleteI actually really like Friday 13th - it was the day my first dog was born and the day I passed my driving test!
ReplyDeleteAlthough *no judgment here* I still search for a second magpie everytime too lol
Em :-D

Aww I do too! I think it's awesome actually :)
DeleteHaha thanks for the no judgement!
I'm not superstitious in the least but I have to work on a ladder outside today and I'm betting not a single person will walk under it (usually there are a few). I'm quite entertained by this
ReplyDeleteI agree, I doubt anyone will walk under it lol!
DeleteWell she should hurry because there will be no 2013! I don't believe in Friday the 13th, or most superstitions, but I do avoid walking under ladders where I can. I'm not sure why. But so far today has been quite lucky for me actually. My niece isn't coming here like she usually does, but Jessie will. I'll have a day filled with beer, Frasier, and a good friend. That sounds like a pretty good day to me.
ReplyDeleteIt HAS been unlucky for my dad however because my brother got a new car from my stepbrother, and this means dad has to foot the insurance. My brother has only been driving for a few months and has already written a car off (it was a total accident though), so yeah...that insurance is gonna be high.
Aww it does sound like you're gonna have a good night, enjoy! And that sucks for your dad though. He should make your brother pay his own insurance to teach him to be more careful!
DeleteOnly bel13vers will get their luck taken away. Hehe, see what I did there.
ReplyDeleteIndeed I did Fang, very clever :P
DeleteI always think of jinxing too! When I think I've jinxed myself I knock on wood. Habit dies hard, as you say.
ReplyDeleteAlso, only unlucky thing that happened to me this Friday the thirteenth was gym class! *knocks on wood to avoid IMPENDING DISASTER*
Aww I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about jinxes! And gym/P.E class is always awful lol!
DeleteI never pair up magpies, but I always salute them, haha!
ReplyDeleteOn the news it said that on Friday 13th, it's cheaper to get plain tickets, because no one travels on that day :') It amused me slightly. Also the worst thing that happened to me on Friday 13th was when a mirror fell on me and knocked me out lmao!
Ahh I've heard of the saluting thing but never do it myself! And that is amusing about the flights! And I hope you're okay lol
DeleteWe have a lot of superstitious belief, but when I grew up, I've come to realize that they have nothing to do with luck in life, like Friday 13th.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe, there was an old belief here that if you sing in front of the fire while cooking, you'll be a maiden for the rest of your life.
Wow really? That old belief is ironically quite unbelievable! The things people will believe!
DeletePeople and numbers are so silly sometimes, the whole correlation/causation fallacy is so ingrained into some people. I'm glad you don't fall for that nonsense, Hazel.
ReplyDeleteAww I'm glad you don't either!
DeleteOh no no no.. Jinxes are all to real. Back in the day a old lady was begging for change and I through in a dollar and she jinxed me because she saw a twenty in my wallet. Two days later I fell down a flight of stairs. It was painful.
ReplyDeleteAww I'm sorry to hear that! Though because it was two days later, could it have just been an accident and not connected to her at all? Tis very curious
DeleteI love your new header Hazel. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI personally find 13 to be very lucky number for me so I never was bothered by it. My grandma was the queen of superstitions and as a kid she scared the crap out of me. Fortunately I started analyzing things as I got older and realized how silly they were. But it is sad that some people live their lives around fear.
Hugs!!!!!
Aww thanks!
DeleteAnd your grandma sounded like a wacky lady lol! And exactly, we can't live in fear...
I wouldn't say I have any superstitions, at least none that I can think of. Although I still cringe a little bit if I have to walk under a ladder. I think superstitions are just people telling themselves something bad's going to happen, so when something does they can blame it on the superstition.
ReplyDeleteI'm just more paranoid than superstitious.
To be honest, I'm incredibly paranoid too. I do the exact same rationalisation that you do when something bad happens, e.g. "Oh it's cause I only saw one magpie today" lol
DeleteI don't think I have any at all I certinaly don't believe in the whole friday 13th being a bad day, heck I had an awesome day yesterday :) but I am paranoid as fuck loololololol
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Join the club because Kate and I are pretty paranoid too lol!
DeleteI didn't even noticed Friday the 13th but I certainly not get married next year. hehe.. Great post hazel. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha that's good coz it shows you're not really that bothered by it! Thank you :)
